Ian Smith Profile

Ian Smith practised as a solicitor in London from 1995 and was a solicitor advocate until his call to the Bar in 2003. Ian is a commercial litigator, whose practice encompasses complex and high value cases often with an international dimension. He is a specialist in:

  • Civil court fraud litigation
  • Private international law
  • Asset recovery
  • Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA)
  • Anti-money laundering law.

Ian Smith is the lead editor and co-author of the practitioners' text Smith, Owen & Bodnar on Asset Recovery: Criminal Confiscation and Civil Recovery (2007, Oxford University Press), a regular speaker at conferences and writer in the legal press.  Ian is a founding committee member of the Proceeds of Crime Lawyers’ Association.

Ian is recommended in Chamber & Partners 2010 as a leading junior for Civil Fraud: 'Ian is a former solicitor, whose "commercial, hands-on approach is in tune with clients' goals." He is particularly favoured for his expertise in proceeds of crime and money-laundering matters, and is a frequent writer and speaker on these issues. Smith was recently led in 4 Eng v Harper, securing damages in excess of £8 million.'
